A tree should be planted in about thirty seconds: hole, seedling, backfill, water. If it takes much longer, the root ball is drying out and your odds are dropping with it.

Why speed matters

Exposed roots lose moisture in minutes on a warm day. The fastest, simplest planting is also the one that survives. Fancy doesn't help. Quick and correct does.

The whole sequence

Match the depth to the root collar, backfill the native soil, and water deep. Then stop fussing — the tree has a century of work to do without you.
